About the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment Flag

In 1777 the New Hampshire Committee of Safety gave each regiment funds meant to purchase flags. The 2nd Regiment commissioned the creation of two different flags to carry as their colors. A Boston milliner (maker of women's hats and accessories) was hired to produce the silk and sew the flags together. Daniel Rea Jr. then was brought on to paint the designs. The flag features the “Chain of States” symbol created by Benjamin Franklin that also appears on Continental currency from the same period. The chain combined with the motto “We Are One” was meant to represent unity among the states. The flag also retains the British union stitched in its canton.

In May of 1777 the flags reached the unit at Fort Ticonderoga. As the Continental Army abandoned Ticonderoga, the 2nd Regiment marched with the rest of the army to the Battle of Hubbardton. Meanwhile, the flags themselves were moved separately with the army’s baggage. While the 2nd Regiment was fighting at Hubbardton, 30 miles away the British 9th Regiment of Foot was capturing their flags at Fort Anne. The flags were sent to England as war trophies and weren’t returned until 1913 when they were donated to the New Hampshire Historical Society.
