Hopkinson 13 Star American Flag

While not an official design of the United States, this particular iteration is often credited as the true first draft. Hopkinson represented New Jersey in the Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence and even designed the official seal of the State of New Jersey. He was one of several designers consulted when creating the first flag of our nation and is often credited as the sole creator of America’s flag.

Hopkinson Flag Size Recommendations

• 12x18” - Used on boats, wall decoration or on stick flags for celebrations
• 2x3’ - A smaller flag size usually used on large boats, RV’s or small flag poles
• 3x5’ - The most common flag size. Used on 6' house-mounted poles or in-ground poles up to 20' tall
• 4x6’ - Traditionally used on 25' tall in-ground flagpoles
• 5x8’ - Made for use on 30' tall in-ground flag poles
• 6x10’ - Made for use on 35' - 40' tall in-ground flagpoles
• Header and Grommet style - This is the most popular way to attach a flag and is used on house mounted poles and in-ground flag poles. Generally made of brass and connected via snap clip or plastic grommet rings like our rotating spinning pole.

More About This Flag's Unique History

Francis Hopkinson was a lawyer, poet, artist, and patriot from New Jersey. He is often credited as the official creator of our nation’s flag while the true history is somewhat unclear. In 1780, Hopkinson wrote to the Board of Admiralty requesting payment in exchange for creating the design for the United States flag. He famously suggested that a “Quarter Cask of the public wine” would be sufficient payment for his contributions. His claims were denied on the basis that he was not the only designer consulted and therefore could not take all the credit. The Board of Treasury argued that Hopkinson earned a high salary and his contributions to the design were a service to the public. While history remains contentious about true credit, Hopkinson is often given the title as the official designer of the American flag.
