Also known as the North Carolina Militia flag, this design is a unique Revolutionary War era symbol. Notable for its reverse American flag color scheme and six-pointed stars, it’s unlikely the flag was intended to serve as the official national flag. Rather, it’s probable that it was designed as a variation of popular symbols as a way to represent a specific military unit.
The Guilford Courthouse flag is said to have been carried to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse on March 15, 1781. The battle is regarded as one of the bloodiest of the war and despite victory being credited to the British, they received a major blow by losing over 25% of their troops. The American forces, led by General Nathanael Greene, successfully weakened the British army before withdrawing from the battle. The British troops were unable to continue pursuing Greene and retreated back to their base at Wilmington. Even after a month, their troops were in no opposition to re-engage with Greene and shifted their attention to Virginia instead. This decision would ultimately contribute to the American victory at Yorktown a few months later.
