Viking Black Raven Flag

First appearing in historical records as early as 878 AD, the Viking banner was viewed as a kind of psychological weapon, announcing the arrival of the “Great Heathen Army”. The raven is a nod to the two ravens that accompany Odin, the God of war and wisdom, representing thought and memory. The flag represented a direct line to Odin, suggesting that the “All-Father” was watching the battle. It was not a one-time gimmick, but a consistent symbol for over 200 years, cementing its importance in Norse heritage and tradition. While the raven banner has a rich legend, it’s also cemented in reality, appearing in several historical accounts. Referenced in both the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and the Annals of St. Neots, the former introduced the legend that the banner had magical properties.

It was believed the raven emblazoned on the banner was actually a living animal. It was said that if the raven’s wings flapped, victory for the Vikings was assured. But if the banner hung limp, defeat was imminent. In another tale written in the Orkneyinga Saga, the raven banner was destined to bring victory to its bearers, but death to whoever carried it. Several standard-bearers died in battle and even Sigourd the Stout himself fell while carrying the banner in 1014 CE, where his flag was last seen.

• 3x5’ - The most common flag size. Used on 6' house-mounted poles or in-ground poles up to 20' tall
• 4x6’ - Traditionally used on 25' tall in-ground flagpoles
• 5x8’ - Made for use on 30' tall in-ground flag poles
• 6x10’ - Made for use on 35' - 40' tall in-ground flagpoles
• Header and Grommet style - This is the most popular way to attach a flag and is used on house mounted poles and in-ground flag poles. Generally made of brass and connected via snap clip or plastic grommet rings like our rotating spinning pole.
