Memorial Day Flags, Banners & Grave Markers

Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have died serving our county. The stars and stripes can be seen everywhere as the parades pass through town. There is always an air of solemnity to the proceedings though, as volunteers go through cemeteries to place on the graves of veterans the flag of the country they sacrificed their lives to defend.

History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day began in the aftermath of the Civil War. Both the North and the South had their own ceremonies for honoring the dead on both sides of the conflict. Eventually, these traditions of honoring Union and Confederate soldiers were merged, and the honor was expanded to include all war dead, not just those killed during the Civil War.

In 1968, Congress mandated that Memorial Day, along with three other federal holidays, be moved to specific Mondays in order to create 3-day holiday weekends. Though there was some pushback from the sates, they all eventually complied with Congress and moved the dates of the holidays. Though, there are still many who want the observance of Memorial Day to return to it's traditional May 30th date.

Memorial Day is sometimes confused with Veterans Day, though the two are distinctly different holidays. You can learn more about the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day here.
