Deluxe Single-Pulley Spindle-Style Revolving Flagpole Truck

The truck is the assembly at the very top of a flagpole — the housing that holds the pulley and supports the ornament (the ball or eagle on top). When your halyard frays, the pulley wears out, or your flag keeps wrapping around the pole, the truck is usually the part that needs replacing.

This is our Deluxe spindle-style revolving truck, built for external halyard in-ground flagpoles with a threaded female fitting on top. It's the most common replacement truck for residential and light commercial poles in this configuration — cast aluminum housing, machined aluminum pulley, self-lubricating ball bearings for smooth rotation under load.

Critical Sizing — Read Before Ordering

This truck threads into a 1.25" NPT female fitting on top of your pole. If your pole doesn't have that fitting, this truck won't work — measure and confirm before ordering. Size mismatches are the most common return on flagpole hardware.

Two things to verify on your pole:

  1. The pole top has a threaded female fitting — look down into the top of the pole. You should see internal threads. If the top is solid, capped, or open with no threads, you have a different style of pole top.
  2. The threading is 1.25" NPT (National Pipe Thread). This is the standard size on most residential and light commercial in-ground poles, but commercial manufacturers occasionally use proprietary threading. If you can't confirm, contact us with the pole's make and model.

The truck fits poles with an outside top diameter of up to 3.5". The pole's OD doesn't need to match the truck — the truck threads in, it doesn't clamp on.

Spindle-Style vs. Cap-Style — Which Do You Have?

This is the most common point of confusion when ordering a replacement truck. The two designs aren't interchangeable, and pole top design dictates which one you need.

Spindle-Style (this truck)

The truck has a threaded spindle on its base that screws into a female fitting inside the pole top. The pole top has internal threads visible when you look down into it. This is the most common style on residential and light commercial in-ground flagpoles.

Cap-Style

The truck slides over the outside of a hollow tapered pole top and clamps with set screws. No threads on the pole, no fitting required. If that describes your pole, see our Premium Cap-Style External Rotating Truck instead.

If your halyard runs inside the pole rather than along the outside, you have an internal halyard system, which uses a different truck design entirely. Internal halyard systems vary by pole manufacturer — contact us with your pole make and model and we'll point you to the right replacement.

What Makes This the Deluxe

Two things separate this truck from our Standard Single-Pulley Revolving Truck, and both matter over the long haul:

Machined aluminum pulley wheel. The Deluxe uses a 1.5" machined aluminum pulley on a stainless steel axle. The Standard uses a plastic pulley wheel. Plastic works fine for a few seasons but eventually deforms, cracks, or wears a groove that frays the halyard — aluminum doesn't.

Self-lubricating ball bearing assemblies. The bearings are what allow the pulley assembly to spin freely around the pole as the wind shifts, preventing the halyard and flag from wrapping. The Deluxe uses sealed self-lubricating ball bearings rated for continuous outdoor rotation — no annual greasing, no service intervals. Lower-grade trucks often use plain bushings or low-grade bearings that bind up within a season or two.

If you're replacing a truck that lasted you 15+ years, this is the like-for-like upgrade. If you want a budget option for a less-trafficked pole, the Standard Single-Pulley Revolving Truck is the same form factor with a plastic pulley wheel.

What Pairs Well

Halyard (5/16" Maximum)

Replacing a truck is the right time to replace the halyard rope too. Browse halyard options.

Spindle-Threaded Ornaments

This truck accepts ornaments with 1/2"-13NC spindle threading — the standard size for ball ornaments, eagle finials, and other top decorations. Browse outdoor finials.

Cleat and Snap Hardware

A new cleat for tying off the halyard and a fresh pair of flag snaps complete the refresh. Browse cleats and flag snaps.

Installation Overview

Replacing a truck is a straightforward job, provided you can safely access the top of the pole.

You'll need

  • Safe overhead access to the pole top — typically a bucket truck or lift
  • A pipe wrench for the truck spindle
  • Thread sealant or PTFE tape rated for outdoor use
  • A second person on the ground to manage the halyard
  • A new halyard, ornament, cleat, and snaps if you're refreshing the whole top assembly

Procedure

  1. Lower and remove the flag.
  2. Untie the halyard from the cleat at the base of the pole. Pull one end up and through the old truck's pulley to free the rope.
  3. Remove the existing truck assembly from the pole.
  4. Inspect the female fitting on the pole top — clean out any debris, old sealant, or corrosion before installing the new truck.
  5. Apply thread sealant or PTFE tape to the new truck's 1.25" NPT spindle threads.
  6. Thread the new truck into the pole top. Hand-tighten first, then snug with a pipe wrench. Don't overtighten — NPT threads seal by interference, and excess force can crack a cast housing.
  7. Thread your halyard through the new pulley and tie off at the cleat.
  8. Thread a new ornament into the 1/2"-13NC top drilling and secure with the included 1/4"-20NC stainless set screw.

Plan to replace the ornament too. Existing ball and eagle finials almost never come off cleanly — they're typically corroded, weather-fused, or threaded into a truck you're discarding. Order a replacement outdoor finial along with the truck so you're not stuck mid-job.

Don't work on a pole in wind, and don't work alone if you can avoid it. A swinging halyard or a dropped tool from height can cause serious injury.

Made in the USA

This truck is cast and assembled in the United States. We carry it specifically because the build quality holds up against imported alternatives that wear bearings within a season or two. Read more about our commitment to American-made products.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a spindle-style truck and how does it differ from cap-style?

A spindle-style truck (this one) has a threaded base that screws into a female fitting inside the top of the pole. A cap-style truck slides over the outside of the pole and clamps with set screws. The two designs are not interchangeable — your pole's top construction determines which one you need. If your pole has a tapered top with no threaded fitting, you need cap-style.

How do I know if my pole has a 1.25" NPT female fitting?

Look down into the top of the pole. If you see internal threads, you have a threaded fitting. 1.25" NPT is the standard size on most residential and light commercial in-ground poles. If you can't confirm, contact us with the pole's make and model and we'll check against our records.

Does the truck rotate a full 360 degrees?

No, and it shouldn't — full 360° rotation would mean the halyard isn't anchored, which would defeat the purpose of being able to raise and lower the flag. The truck rotates roughly 270° before the halyard reaches its tether point at the cleat. That range of motion is what prevents the flag from wrapping in normal wind, and if it does briefly wrap during a sudden wind shift, the truck rotates back the other way to unwrap itself rather than locking up. This is the intended design behavior, not a defect.

What halyard size does this truck use?

The pulley is rated for halyard up to 5/16" diameter. Larger diameters won't seat properly in the pulley groove. Smaller diameters will work but may slip. We recommend replacing the halyard at the same time as the truck.

What ornaments fit this truck?

Any standard ornament with 1/2"-13NC spindle threading — that includes most ball finials and eagle ornaments designed for in-ground flagpoles. The included set screw secures the ornament so it won't unthread in wind.

Are the bearings really maintenance-free?

Yes. The self-lubricating ball bearing assemblies are sealed and require no annual service, greasing, or opening up the housing. Under normal residential or light commercial use, they're rated for many years of continuous outdoor rotation.

Can I install this myself?

Yes, with the right equipment. You'll need safe access to the top of the pole (typically a bucket truck or lift), a pipe wrench, thread sealant or PTFE tape, and a helper on the ground.
