Black Marlin Fun Facts

Scientifically named the Istiompax Indica, these fish get their name from their dark colored upper bodies that fade into a silvery white underbelly. Black marlin are highly migratory, known to travel thousands of miles in one year. Hotspots for these fish can be found in Costa Rica, Australia, Mexico, and Hawaii. While black marlin are reliably caught in shallow waters they’ve also been caught offshore in thousands of feet of water. Of all the billfish, black marlin are the second largest just behind the blue marlin. The largest of these fish ever caught was 1,560 lbs., recorded in 1953 in Peru.
