Scientifically named Lutjanus Cyanopterus, these fish were first described by Georges Cuvier in 1828 based on a Brazilian specimen. Interestingly, the word cyanopterus actually means blue fin, despite the cubera only showing tinges of blue coloration. Differentiating from its fellow snappers, the cubera has a much slimmer body shape. They do have the classic long snapper canine teeth, which are visible even when their mouths are closed! Cubera snappers are located from Massachusetts to Brazil in the western Atlantic Ocean. However, they are a tropical species and are rarely seen north of Florida or in the Gulf of Mexico. A popular game and food fish, cubera snappers are vulnerable to overfishing due to their spawning cycles.
