America was referred to informally as Columbia during early years of existence. Lady Columbia was used widely as the female personification of America in print, literature and advertising from the post-Revolutionary period thru WWI. In time her popularity waned and became blended with the that of Lady Liberty iconography. She was used as a representative of the American values on which our country was founded, upon which it grew and prospered. It is important to remember her to honor the spirit of freedom, individuality and sense of independence that is baked into our DNA as a country and people.
