Organized in Mattoon, IL and put into federal service on 11/28/1862, discharged at Camp Butler,IL on 9/21/1865. Three Commanders: Colonel Lyman Guinnip- resigned 10/17/1862, Colonel Sheridan P. Read- KIA in "Battle of Stoner's River" 12/31/1862, Colonel Allen Buckner- went on to the end of the regiment.
