The New York state flag, as adopted in 1896, featured the state coat of arms on a buff (light tan) field. The color was based on the uniform colors of troops during the Revolutionary War and proved unpopular with its citizenry. The currentl dark blue background replaced the buff by a law enacted on April 2, 1901.Â
