One of the Six Flags of Texas, officially in use from 1785-1821. This flag is most recognized as the "Texas Under Spain Flag" but likely had the shortest tenure amongst the Spanish Flags in use during the overall time period. Spain laid claim to the territory from 1519-1685 and again from 1690-1821. This Spanish flag was only used as a war ensign from 1785 onwards. Prior to that the most likely flag flown by the Spanish would have been the Cross of Burgundy Flag, signifying Spanish rule from the time of Cortez until Mexican Independence. While less common, the Spanish Flag of Castile was also flown during the early period of Spanish claim.
