How to Re-String a Flag Pole: Halyard Replacement

Replacing flagpole halyard might seem intimidating, but it is a normal part of caring for your flag and flagpole.

With the right tools and clear instructions, you can have your flagpole re-strung in just a few minutes — provided you haven't waited until the rope is completely broken!

Follow these step-by-step instructions and you'll have your flagpole restrung in no time.

Step-by-Step: Replacing a Flagpole Halyard

Step 1: Lower and Remove Your Flag

Bring the flag down from the top of the pole and detach it from the current halyard you are preparing to replace.

Step 2: Remove Clips and Hardware

After removing the flag, take off the clips and any other hardware attached to the halyard. This ensures the rope can move freely through the pulley.

Step 3: Untie the Knot Keeping the Ends Together

Carefully untie the knot that connects the two ends of your halyard. Be sure to keep both ends in your hand to prevent them from sliding up through the pulley.

Step 4: Attach the New Halyard to the Old

Using a small piece of wire or tape, attach one end of your new halyard to the end of the old halyard. Ensure the joint is slim enough to pass through the pulley. We recommend using a piece of wire (similar to a staple) — push it through each end with a few inches to spare, bend it over, and secure it with tape.

Step 5: Pull the Old Halyard Through

Gently pull the loose end of the old halyard. This will bring the joint up to the top of the pole and through the pulley. If the joint seems stuck, use the new halyard's loose end to smooth the passage.

Step 6: Tie the New Halyard and Reattach Your Flag

Once the jointed section has been pulled through, remove the wire and tape. Tie the ends of your new halyard together securely and reattach your flagpole clips along with the flag.

Tip: While the knot demonstrated in the video is commonly used, a more formal approach is to tie a double fisherman's knot. See the diagram below for reference.
