The personal position flag of our first president and finest general, George Washington, used to denote his whereabouts or headquarters. Featuring 13 unique six pointed stars, the flag uses a lighter blue background thought to be favored by Washington for his personal use. This replica is offered at 2.5x3', which approximates the actual size which was measured at 27.5x35.5". Size ratio and color are based upon an original flag artifact which is currently preserved and on display at the Museum of the Revolution in Philadelphia. The original was rumored to have flown above his headquarters during the horrific winter encampment at Valley Forge.

About Washington’s Personal Position Flag
A legendary general deserves their own flag, and George Washington’s Personal Position flag fits that bill. The flag was used during the Revolutionary War to mark Washington’s position or headquarters. It’s believed the flag even flew over his headquarters at Valley Forge during the infamous winter encampment.
The flag features 13 six-pointed stars amidst a light blue background, representing a new constellation. As a military general, Washington wore six-pointed stars on his shoulder and a light blue sash as a symbol of authority. It’s believed these details inspired the flags’ unique design.

Washington’s Personal Position Flag Through History
Washington’s original flag was kept in the family for generations, before being donated to Revered W. Herbert Burk’s museum of American history by descendants of his sister in 1910. In 2003 it was donated to the Museum of Revolution in Philadelphia, where it resides today. The artifact is thought to be the earliest surviving 13-star American flag and is so fragile, it can only be displayed on special occasions.
The Museum of Revolution also is home to a replica of Washington’s Personal Position flag that was taken into space by astronaut John Glenn. As part of the lead up to the 1999 bicentennial commemorations of Washington’s death in 1799, the flag flew with the Discovery crew and orbited the earth 134 times.
