Barbary pirates, or Corsairs, were primarily Muslim privateers and pirates who ransomed ships captured near the Atlantic African Coast and the Mediterranean Sea. Operating from outposts along the North African “Barbary Coast” (consisting of modern day Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco) these pirates were notorious as slave traders as well as pirates, consistently harassing European trade vessels and settlements from the 17th thru 19th Centuries.
