CSA​ ​command​ ​during​ ​the​ ​Civil​ ​War,​ ​named​ ​for​ ​Major​ ​General​ ​Dabney​ ​Maury.​ ​Maury,​ ​a​ ​graduate​ ​of​ ​West Point,​ ​had​ ​served​ ​the​ ​CSA​ ​during​ ​battles​ ​at​ ​Vicksubrg,​ ​Mississippi​ ​and​ ​during​ ​the​ ​defense​ ​of​ ​Mobile,​ ​Al. He​ ​was​ ​named​ ​head​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Department​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Gulf​ ​in​ ​the​ ​later​ ​years​ ​of​ ​war​ ​and​ ​was​ ​responsible​ ​for​ ​a territory​ ​that​ ​ranged​ ​west​ ​from​ ​the​ ​border​ ​of​ ​Georgia​ ​though​ ​the​ ​Gulf​ ​Coast​ ​into​ ​Louisiana.​ ​The distinctive​ ​design​ ​features​ ​stars​ ​for​ ​each​ ​of​ ​the​ ​CSA​ ​and​ ​a​ ​central​ ​Christian​ ​cross.
