About Code Signal Flags

Signal flags are used for nautical ship-to-ship communication and are an international standard in maritime meant to relay important messages, primarily related to safety and navigation. Signal flags are hoisted to relay information to other vessels, with each letter of the alphabet having a particular meaning when used singly, doubly or in conjunction with other letter and number combinations.

Initially the alphabet was used for all ship-to-ship communication, but many problems arose during busy traffic or unusual situations like wartime. As signal flags have evolved and ship to ship radio transmissions became more reliable, the complexity of the usage has decreased, with most modern flag communications being used to relay very simple, vital information to other vessels. Flags are still required on commercial vessels and for foreign ports of call, and generally speaking larger ocean bound vessels have at least one set of flags on board.
