The History of the Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Awareness FlagRibbons have been the symbol of awareness and support for a variety of causes for decades, dating back to the 1970s. The pink ribbon that became the symbol for breast cancer support and awareness actually originated as a peach colored ribbon.
A woman named Charlotte Hayley, who had battled breast cancer herself, began handing out peach colored ribbons as part of a grassroots effort to encourage more funding for cancer prevention initiatives. Self Magazine wanted to partner with Hayley as part of a Breast Cancer Awareness Month issue they were working on in the early 1990s. Hayley felt that the magazine's interests were too commercial and declined to work with them. As a result, the magazine was not allowed to utilize the peach colored ribbon in their promotions, and instead chose to promote breast cancer awareness with a pink ribbon.
The pink ribbon was soon adopted as the symbol for breast cancer awareness, and was made more prominent by companies like Estee Lauder and The Susan G. Komen Foundation.
