The​ ​IX​ ​Corp​ ​fought​ ​everywhere​ ​from​ ​the​ ​Carolinas​ ​to​ ​Mississippi.​ ​Commanded​ ​by​ ​Ambrose​ ​Burnside, they​ ​fought​ ​the​ ​2nd​ ​Battle​ ​of​ ​Bull​ ​Run,​ ​Antietam​ ​and​ ​Fredericksburg,​ ​suffering​ ​heavy​ ​losses.​ ​They​ ​served in​ ​the​ ​bloody​ ​Battle​ ​of​ ​the​ ​Wilderness​ ​and​ ​both​ ​battles​ ​in​ ​Petersburg​ ​VA,​ ​the​ ​second​ ​of​ ​which​ ​led directly​ ​to​ ​the​ ​surrender​ ​of​ ​the​ ​confederacy​ ​at​ ​Appomattox.
