Revenue Cutter Flag

Historical ensign flag of the U.S. Division of Revenue Cutter Service (or earlier Revenue Marine), the precursor to the modern Coast Guard. The flag features a traditional stylized eagle at canton with alternating vertical stripes of red and white in the field of the flag. Initially the RCS was a customs and tariff collection and enforcement agency and quickly found itself involved in military engagements and anti-piracy efforts throughout the Caribbean in enforcement of this duty. Eventually the agency was reformed (combining with the U.S. Life Saving Service) as the U.S. Coast Guard but operated independently for over 100 years from 1790 to 1915.
