George Washington took the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army on July 3, 1775 at Cambridge, Massachusetts. This was his own personal standard and would fly wherever he went to battle, at headquarters and during his travels. It is sometimes called Washington's Headquarters Flag.
