About the Vatican City Flag

Though today we know The Vatican as a small city state within the city of Rome, it was not always so. The pope, in addition to being the ultimate spiritual authority of the Catholic Church, also wielded worldly power. He ruled over the Papal States, which extended across central Italy in the middle ages. With the unification of Italy in the 1800s, the Pope lost all of his authority as a head of state, until the Vatican was granted independence from Italy in 1929. The Papal flag was adopted as the official flag of Vatican City with the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929, which granted the Vatican independence from the state of Italy.

Papal Flag Design Details

The Papal flag consists of two vertical bands (one of gold and one of white) with the crossed keys of Saint Peter, and the Papal Tiara centered in the white band. The crossed keys, one gold and one silver, are meant to represent the keys to Heaven given to St. Peter. The gold key represents spiritual power, and the silver key represents temporal power, symbolizing the authority of the Pope in both realms. The flag is modeled on the earlier Papal flag of the Papal States during the Middle Ages.

Common Uses of the Vatican City Flag

In addition to being the official flag of the Vatican, the Papal flag is flown outside many Catholic churches. It is in their application as Catholic flags that the Papal flags see most of their uses. All of our Catholic flags are of a high quality nylon fabric, allowing the vibrant colors on the Papal flag to come to life. The brilliant gold and shining silver of the keys on the Papal flag will not fade even in the fiercest sun.

These Catholic flags can also be displayed indoors with an indoor display set. The Catholic flags included in these sets will still be of a colorful nylon, but included around the edges will be gorgeous gold fringe. Mounted on an oak pole, and fixed into a gold base, these sets will complete the look of any church they're placed in.
