A short history of the Tennessee State flag

Influence of the Battle Flag of the Confederacy can be seen in the flag of Tennessee. It was officially adopted on April 17, 1905 and was designed by Captain LeRoy Reeves. He was a member of the Third Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry. The three regions of Tennessee are represented by the three stars, which are called Grand Divisions. For the Exposition of 1897, which marked Tennessee as a member of the Union, the previous flag was designed with three diagonal red, blue and white stripes, with the state nickname in gold on the blue. The Tennessee seal was adopted in 1801 and not used on any flags.
