There is even a <a title=\"rainbow flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/original-rainbow-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">rainbow flag<\/span><\/a> that connects to his stand on \u201cLGBT rights.\u201d<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nRecently, Thompson sponsored a new law that brought <a title=\"American flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flags<\/span><\/a> in line with such things as food and clothing. As he described it, the law \u201cmakes sure every flag bought by the U.S. Department of Defense is 100 percent made in America with American products.\u201d It was, he added, \u201cappalling\u201d that such a law was needed.<\/p>\n<p>One reason he was interested in such a law is that his district encompasses a manufacturer of flags. But, in addition, there are two more important reasons: He a Vietnam War veteran and a Purple Heart winner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur men in women in uniform should serve under American-made flags,\u201d declared Thompson, who is a Democrat, \u201cand our tax dollars should be spent on American-made flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raising-a-flag-at-the-Penta.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-993\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raising-a-flag-at-the-Penta-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"Raising a flag at the Pentagon\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raising-a-flag-at-the-Penta-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raising-a-flag-at-the-Penta-447x300.jpg 447w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Raising-a-flag-at-the-Penta.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Raising a flag at the Pentagon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Pentagon buys thousands of flags every year for everything from ship masts to burial ceremonies. Now those flags will be totally American-made. Previously, U.S. flags either were wholly made in China and elsewhere off-shore, or they had some portion of them (the cloth or dyes, for instance) produced outside the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the use of foreign-produced flags surged after 9\/11, when American manufacturers could not keep up with demand. (The new law, which passed in February, applies only to the Department of Defense. Other government agencies can continue to buy flags overseas.)<\/p>\n<p>The law adds flags to a list of items that must be American-made. That list, which is now more than 70 years old, was passed just before World War II began and encompasses food, uniforms and even stainless steel.<\/p>\n<p>Now, at least for the Pentagon, \u201cwhat so proudly we hail\u201d will also be a totally U.S.-made item.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you go to the website of Congressman Mike Thompson of California, you\u2019ll see several flags.
