{"id":97,"date":"2013-03-02T11:15:33","date_gmt":"2013-03-02T16:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/?p=97"},"modified":"2025-04-07T13:42:28","modified_gmt":"2025-04-07T17:42:28","slug":"wrapped-in-a-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wrapped-in-a-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"Wrapped in a flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The expression \u201che wrapped himself in the flag\u201d has a negative connotation that implies someone is using patriotism to disguise baser motives.<\/p>\n<p>In the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, however, some people \u2013 most of them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/military-flags\/armed-forces\">military<\/a> figures &#8212; were literally wrapped in flags as part of their funeral ceremonies. In 1840, for instance, the last request of Thomas Oxnard, who captained both privateers and merchant vessels, was to be wrapped in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a> before being interred \u2013 in France.<\/p>\n<p>Another example is Gen. Charles Floyd of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/georgia-state-flags\">Georgia<\/a>. When he passed away in 1845, word went out that \u201chis body was, at his own request, shrouded in the American flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Women who served as nurses during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/historical-military-flags\">Civil War<\/a> wanted the same privilege. \u201cI am bound for heaven,\u201d one of them told a newspaper. \u201cI want to be buried with the American flag wrapped around my body.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Andrew-Johnson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-99\" title=\"Andrew Johnson\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Andrew-Johnson-262x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"262\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Andrew-Johnson-262x300.jpg 262w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Andrew-Johnson.jpg 603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Andrew Johnson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the most famous Americans to follow that custom was President Andrew Johnson. When he was buried in Tennessee in 1875, shortly after being re-elected to the Senate, his copy of the Constitution was placed under his head, and his body was wrapped in a U.S. flag made of silk.<\/p>\n<p>That should have come as no surprise. An early biographer of the 17<sup>th<\/sup> president wrote, \u201cIt has been said that Andrew Johnson never made a public address in which he did not make some reference to the flag and Constitution of his country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two funeral directors contacted for this article said that, in their decades of serving families, they have never heard of such a practice and that it has perhaps been supplanted by draping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/military-flags\/mourning-casket-drape\">flags over coffins<\/a>. One of them offers to embroider U.S. flags on the inside lid of caskets, especially for veterans, as a way of honoring their service to their nation.<\/p>\n<p>Both funeral directors said they would be willing to wrap deceased persons in flags as long as doing so did not violate any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flag-code\">flag code<\/a> or custom.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The expression \u201che wrapped himself in the flag\u201d has a negative connotation that implies someone is using patriotism to disguise baser motives.
