Two years later, it was unfurled \u2013 by the building\u2019s project manager &#8212; atop the unfinished UN tower in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/new-york-city-flags\">New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Picture-9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-107\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Picture-9-300x199.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Picture-9-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Picture-9-451x300.png 451w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Picture-9.png 794w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>First UN Flag (1945-1947)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through the years, the flag\u2019s map of the world has been adjusted slightly. Its first version,\u00a0for instance, omitted an entire country. (Do you know which one? The answer is below.) Furthermore, the website for the UN states that the banner\u2019s proportions, rather than being fixed, should be the same as the \u201cnational flag of any country in which the UN flag is flown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The image on the flag, surrounded by olive branches, is officially defined by the UN as \u201ca map of the world representing an azimuthal equidistant projection centered on the North Pole\u2026The projection of the map extends to 60 degrees south latitude, and includes five concentric circles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations\u2019 Flag Code, affirmed in 1952, declared that the banner \u201cshall not be subjected to any indignity\u201d and that no UN flag could be manufactured without the \u201cwritten consent of the Secretary-General.\u201d He or she even had to approve the sale price.<\/p>\n<p>In 1967, those rules were rescinded, perhaps due to the number of requests asking the Secretary-General to okay the cost of flags at gift shops around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke in his native South Korea about meeting Yi So-yeon, \u201cthe first Korean astronaut who carried the United Nations flag into outer space\u2026.I was deeply honored when she presented me with that special United Nations flag.\u00a0I immediately hung it on the wall in my office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He continued by saying that \u201cour values &#8212; peace, human rights, opportunity and dignity for all people &#8212; are universal values.\u00a0You do not need a flag to uphold them.\u00a0You do not need a spaceship.\u00a0All you need is the determination to stand up for what is right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>(Answer to the question in the first paragraph: <a title=\"Argentina Flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/argentina-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Argentina<\/a> was not a member of the UN when the emblem was designed and was not included on the first flag.)<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By James Breig Hosted by\u00a0Gettysburg Flag Works The flag of the United Nations has been very flexible since it was adopted in 1947.
