Killing one of them spread confusion and panic in troops because they had lost their guide into battle \u2013 and their route to retreat.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Andrew-Jackson-Smith.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-938\" title=\"Andrew Jackson Smith\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Andrew-Jackson-Smith-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Andrew Jackson Smith\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Andrew-Jackson-Smith-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Andrew-Jackson-Smith.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Andrew Jackson Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>February, Black History Month, is good time to remember a flag-bearer named Andrew Jackson Smith, a slave who fled from his owner and made his way to Boston to join the 55<sup>th<\/sup> Massachusetts Colored Infantry.<\/p>\n<p>In 1864, the unit was involved in the Battle of Honey Hill in South Carolina. As recounted years later by Smith, \u201cI had been placed in the color guard\u2026.We had nearly reached the muzzles of the guns when [the color sergeant] was killed. I caught him with one hand and the flag with the other when he staggered back.\u201d<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n\u201cFor God\u2019 sake, Smith, save the flag!\u201d called his commander, and Smith did just that, bearing the regimental flag throughout the remainder of the bloody fighting. When another member of the color guard was wounded, Smith grabbed the state flag from his hands and bore both staffs off the battlefield.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-941\" title=\"Flag of the 55th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly-300x298.jpg\" alt=\"Flag of the 55th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers\" width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly-301x300.jpg 301w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/may2013_monthly.jpg 487w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Flag of the 55th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For his action, Smith would be awarded a Medal of Honor. The citation told of how he bore the flags \u201cthrough heavy grape and canister fire. Although half of the officers and a third of the enlisted men\u2026were killed or wounded, Corporal Smith continued to expose himself to enemy fire by carrying the colors throughout the battle. Through his actions, [the flag was] not lost to the enemy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/A-marker-honoring-Smith.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-936\" title=\"A marker honoring Smith\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/A-marker-honoring-Smith-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"A marker honoring Smith\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/A-marker-honoring-Smith-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/A-marker-honoring-Smith-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/A-marker-honoring-Smith.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A marker honoring Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Smith-in-old-age.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-937\" title=\"Smith in old age\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Smith-in-old-age.jpg\" alt=\"Smith in old age\" width=\"188\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Smith in old age<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The medal citation also noted that \u201cSmith\u2019s extraordinary valor in the face of deadly enemy fire is in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon him\u201d as well as his regiment and the Army.<\/p>\n<p>Receiving that high award is quite an achievement for a soldier, but Smith never knew about it. He was not nominated for the medal until 1916. He died in 1932, and the Medal of Honor was not approved until 2001. It was presented to Smith\u2019s daughter, who was 93.<\/p>\n<p>Decades had to pass for Smith to be recognized for his gallant actions with a flag amid shot and shell 150 years ago.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether it was in battles at Antietam or Vicksburg, Gettysburg or Shiloh, flag-bearers were a main target of enemy fire during the Civil War.
