Carney with the flag he saved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The week that marks the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. and the upcoming observance of Black History Month in February are appropriate times to recall the heroism of Sgt. William H. Carney, a remarkable protector of the U.S. flag during the Civil War.<\/p>\n<p>Born into slavery in Virginia, Carney grew up to travel the Underground Railroad to freedom in Massachusetts. When the 54<sup>th<\/sup> Massachusetts Infantry was formed, he became a member of the first black outfit assembled in the North.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nLed by a white man, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the 54<sup>th<\/sup> found itself in mid-1863 in South Carolina, just two weeks after the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. The regiment joined in the attack on Fort Wagner, which they hoped would lead to the capture of Charleston. (The assault is part of the 1989 film \u201cGlory.\u201d)<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-892 size-medium\" title=\"Sgt. Carney with the flag in a drawing of the assault on Fort Wagner.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The regiment\u2019s history recounts that \u201cWagner became a mound of fire, from which poured a stream of shot and shell.\u201d Amid the chaos, a flag-bearer \u201cfell into a deep ditch,\u201d and Carney \u201ccaught the colors.\u201d He would recall that \u201cas quick as a thought, I threw away my gun, seized the colors and made my way to the head of the column.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Shaw waving his sword and Carney waving the <a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flag<\/span><\/a>, the black troops pressed on. Shaw was killed, but the 54<sup>th<\/sup> moved ever forward, following Carney\u2019s lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll around me were the dead and wounded, lying one upon top the other,\u201d the former slave remembered. \u201cIt seemed a miracle that I should have been spared in that awful slaughter.\u201d Realizing that the battle was lost, he said, \u201cI wrapped the precious colors about the staff and cautiously picked my way among the dead and dying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When a bullet fractured his thigh bone, he began crawling, still clutching the national banner. A Boston newspaper would report that \u201che brought the colors off, creeping on his knees, pressing his wound with one hand and with the other holding up the emblem of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-890 size-medium\" title=\"Sgt. Carney with his medal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wounded again in his head, Carney still refused to surrender the flag for anyone else to carry. When he finally reached his fellow soldiers, \u201cthey cheered me and the flag,\u201d he related, \u201cand my reply was \u2018Boys, the old flag never touched the ground.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For his heroism amid shot and shell, Carney was awarded the Medal of Honor.
