They were the worn-out flags of the Civil War \u2013 Old Glory, the Stars and Bars of the Confederacy, and regimental colors.<\/p>\n<p>An example is a flag carried by the 16<sup>th<\/sup> Regiment of Ohio volunteers. In 1863, its captain wrote to the Soldiers\u2019 Aid Society in Wooster, Ohio, to thank its members for supporting the troops. Then he added: \u201cThe most acceptable thing they could send us now would be to present the regiment with a new set of Colors. An example is the State of Tennessee\u2019s \u201cSave Our Flags\u201d effort. Special license plates can be purchased, and the income goes \u201ctoward the conservation and preservation of historic flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the group\u2019s website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saveourflags.org\">www.saveourflags.org<\/a>), \u201cOnce conserved, [the flags] will remain safely at the museum for the enjoyment of future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, another Civil War flag was restored after $6,500 was raised by military re-enactors. The flag, which had been held in storage for its protection, is now on display.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-818\" title=\"A Tennessee battalion's ruined banner\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner-300x300.gif\" alt=\"A Tennessee battalion's ruined banner\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner-300x300.gif 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner-150x150.gif 150w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner-299x300.gif 299w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/A-Tennessee-battalions-ruined-banner.gif 418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A Tennessee battalion&#8217;s ruined banner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been 100 years since the public has seen this flag,\u201d said a museum official. \u201cNow it\u2019s cleaned and conserved in a way that will protect it for another 40 or 50 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another banner, this one taken from a Confederate ship by a Union officer, has been returned to Virginia for display in a museum. It has a large tear in it, and its white field has turned brown. It will eventually be displayed at the Hampton Roads Naval Museum in Virginia, but only after preservation efforts are carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Through such efforts, modern-day people are doing what the Ohio officer urged in 1863 about his tattered standard: \u201cThe flag should be preserved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/plus.google.com\/104171654776999761706?rel=author\">James Breig<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>They were torn at the Battle of Gettysburg, shot full of holes at Bull Run and ruined by storms in encampments from Maine to Florida.
