Carrying a large American flag,\u00a0he led a delegation of black citizens \u201cin a manner that personified dignity and patriotism,\u201d said a newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>The occasion was the first Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. For decades, Armistice Day would be celebrated on Nov. 11, the date the peace agreement was signed in France. In little Gouverneur, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/new-york-state-flags\">New York<\/a>, for example, \u201cevery bell in the village\u201d began ringing and every work whistle began sounding when the news was announced that the Great War had ended.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Seattle-women-improvise-a-float-in-1918.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-758\" title=\"Seattle women improvise a float in 1918\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Seattle-women-improvise-a-float-in-1918-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"Seattle women improvise a float in 1918\" width=\"300\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Seattle-women-improvise-a-float-in-1918-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Seattle-women-improvise-a-float-in-1918-369x300.jpg 369w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Seattle-women-improvise-a-float-in-1918.jpg 957w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Seattle women improvise a float in 1918<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>Soon, reported the Watertown Daily Times, people improvised a parade with the village president riding in a car \u201cdecorated by the Stars and Stripes, the <a title=\"Union Jack Flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/king-s-colours-union-jack-flag-choose-options\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Union Jack<\/span><\/a> and the <a title=\"Flag of France\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/france-flag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">French Tri-Color<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Augusta, Georgia, thousands of people rushed downtown when they heard the news. To the daily paper, the celebration showed that \u201cthe Stars and Stripes were in greater victory and in greater honor\u2026.Practically every individual showed the colors of America and her allies, and a sea of flags waved as paraders marched along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Across the continent in Bellingham, Washington, another spontaneous celebration broke out as word quickly spread that peace had arrived. A newspaper said that \u201ca long line [of marchers] was ablaze with <a title=\"American Flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">American flags<\/span><\/a>, with an occasional allied flag\u2026.Liberty hall was bright with two large American flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the eastern end of the nation, in Washington, D.C., hundreds of federal workers exited their office buildings. One woman unfurled a huge <a title=\"U.S. Flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">U.S. flag<\/span><\/a> as another began to sing \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner.\u201d Hats were doffed, and hundreds joined her in the anthem.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, from feelings of joy, enthusiasm and relief, was born Armistice Day, the progenitor of <a title=\"Veterans Day Flag Protocol\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/origins-of-veterans-day\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Veterans Day,<\/span><\/a> observed every Nov. 11 with flags, prayers and gratitude toward those who serve in war and peace.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By James Breig On Nov. 11, 1918, the citizens of Anaconda, Montana, held an impromptu parade.
