Paull<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>John Philip Sousa, the composer, was dubbed \u201cThe March King\u201d for his many flag-related and patriotic melodies. So maybe E.T. Paull should be nicknamed \u201cThe March Prince.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now long forgotten, Paull was a major figure in music in the late 19<sup>th<\/sup> and early 20<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. Recently, Bill Edwards wrote a book about Paull\u2019s life, \u201cThe Music, Art and Life of E.T. Paull: America\u2019s Other March King.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Edwards, better known as \u201cPerfessor Bill,\u201d his moniker as a ragtime and jazz pianist, said that Paull became as famous for the covers of his sheet music as for notes within. Maybe even more famous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1894,\u201d Edwards said, \u201cPaull was in Richmond, running a music store. The novel \u2018Ben Hur\u2019 inspired him, and he wrote a march to describe the chariot race. But he knew he needed something to catch the attention\u201d of shoppers looking for music to play at home. Paull opted for something \u201cbig and bold, and he spent money on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paull\u2019s brainstorm was to use eye-catching, full-color covers at a time when black-and-white images prevailed. \u201cHe liked the pageantry of the art,\u201d Edwards noted. And, as a retailer, \u201che knew that advertising had a lot to do with selling.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-751\" title=\"'America Forever! March'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/America-Forever-March-227x300.jpg\" alt=\"'America Forever! March'\" width=\"227\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/America-Forever-March-227x300.jpg 227w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/America-Forever-March.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption>&#8216;America Forever! March&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Flags flew on many of Paull\u2019s covers, including \u201cPershing\u2019s Crusaders,\u201d \u201cCuster\u2019s Last Charge,\u201d \u201cThe Triumphant Banner,\u201d \u201cWe\u2019ll Stand by the Flag\u201d and \u201cAmerica Forever!\u201d The latter shows a female figure wearing a crown labeled \u201cAmerica.\u201d She is wrapped in a flag and a flag-themed shield lies nearby. Such imagery helped to sell the sheet music, especially during the Spanish-American War and World War I, when patriotism ran high.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Well-Stand-by-the-Flag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-749\" title=\"'We'll Stand by the Flag'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Well-Stand-by-the-Flag-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"'We'll Stand by the Flag'\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Well-Stand-by-the-Flag-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/Well-Stand-by-the-Flag.jpg 740w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>&#8216;We&#8217;ll Stand by the Flag&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Edwards decided to write a biography of Paull because \u201cthere were so many whys about him: Why did he go to this trouble with his covers, why did his production drop off, why are his compositions still sold on eBay?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Triumphant-Banner.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-748\" title=\"'The Triumphant Banner'\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Triumphant-Banner-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"'The Triumphant Banner'\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Triumphant-Banner-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/The-Triumphant-Banner.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>&#8216;The Triumphant Banner&#8217;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The answer to the latter question can be found in the cover art. The bold colors and busy images, including Old Glory, continue to attract people a century after Paull\u2019s ascendancy. The red-white-and-blue flags, heroic soldiers, ancient Romans and even a roaring volcano still catch the eyes of modern viewers.
