Q:<\/span> I have a 25 foot flag pole<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0It is difficult to fly at half mast<\/span><\/a>. \u00a0The flag tangles in bushes and porch. \u00a0What can I do? \u00a0I was told, there is a black banner I can fly bellow the US Flag to indicate mourning , is this true? \u00a0If so where do I purchase one? \u00a0THANKS<\/p>\n

A:<\/span> The black ribbon is typically used for a flagpole<\/span><\/a> that is mounted to the side of the building but I don’t see why it wouldn’t be alright to use it the way you’re talking about. The mourning ribbon<\/span><\/a> is based on the size of your flag and would attach with the top of the flag to the same clip<\/a> as your flag.<\/p>\n

The other options you’ve got are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Leave your American Flag<\/span><\/a> at full staff (the lowering is only mandatory for government buildings)<\/li>\n
  2. Trim your branches or anything that touches the flag<\/li>\n
  3. Fly a smaller American Flag<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on these occasions that doesn’t touch anything when at half staff<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
