Today, we\u2019re exploring what the Honor Guard represents, delve into the meaning behind the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and share an exclusive interview with Joe, a Vietnam War veteran<\/a> who served with the Honor Guard and had the rare opportunity to both meet John F. Kennedy and guard his tomb just a couple of years later.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is an Honor Guard?<\/span><\/h3>\n


\n<\/span>An Honor Guard is a trained ceremonial unit tasked with representing the values of a nation. For the American Honor Guard, the highest standards are expected. After all, they are the units with a lot of exposure to civilians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their Duties and Purpose<\/span><\/h3>\n

The Honor Guard\u2019s respons<\/span>ibilities are diverse, yet simple at the same time. They participate in military funerals<\/a>, state ceremonies, and public memorials, ensuring that the sacrifices of our nation\u2019s heroes are never forgotten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Their presence is comforting for the families of fallen heroes and every gesture\u2014from the folding of the flag to the silent vigil at memorials\u2014 speaks to the pride we have as a country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier<\/span><\/h2>\n

What is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Standing for the unidentified heroes who gave their lives in service, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is beyond an ordinary monument.<\/span><\/p>\n

It symbolizes true loss for soldiers, families, and the American people, which we believe is hard to fathom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet, that ultimate sacrifice is made by countless soldiers whose identities have been lost to history and that is what this monument was made for.<\/span><\/p>\n

When was the tomb built?<\/span><\/h3>\n

Marked by a white marble sarcophagus, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was erected in 1932 following a 1928 design competition. It has since been expanded to include the graves of unknown soldiers from World War II<\/a> and the Korean War<\/a>, whose markers lie between the tomb and the Memorial Amphitheater.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This memorial is part of a broader international tradition, with similar sites in countries like England, France, Canada, Portugal, and Italy, all honoring unidentified war heroes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The unknown soldiers have been posthumously awarded prestigious honors such as the Medal of Honor and the Victoria Cross. The site is always guarded by the U.S. Army’s<\/a> Old Guard, with a formal changing of the guard taking place every hour, or every half-hour during certain daylight periods.<\/span><\/p>\n
