Earlier this week we (Gettysburg Flag Works) sent out a half-staff notification to thousands of our email subscribers based on a message from a customer, a little history, a government Joint Resolution from 12 years ago, and a lot of research. \u00a0The problem… there’s no official Presidential Proclamation! \u00a0Here’s how the story goes;<\/p>\n

2012 National Fallen Firefighters Memorial
Service in Emmitsburg, Maryland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Last year (2012) we were alerted by a customer to a little known half-staff day that he called “National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day”. \u00a0It took time and effort to find out that the day he was talking about was the day of a National Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, MD, that is part of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend each year. \u00a0This weekend seems to fall either the first or second weekend of October but the dates can be found on the official website of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend<\/a><\/span>. \u00a0We found that back in 2001 a Joint Resolution<\/span><\/a> was issued which required that the American flag<\/span><\/a> be lowered on the day of the Memorial Service which falls on that Sunday each year. \u00a0This weekend is in honor of each and every American firefighter who died in the line of duty during the previous year. \u00a0Check out the 2012 service in this youtube video:<\/p>\n
