Cohan, the composer known for his patriotic songs and flag-waving Broadway plays.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Poster-for-Yankee-Doodle-Dandy.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4097\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Poster-for-Yankee-Doodle-Dandy-300x293.jpg\" alt=\"Poster for Yankee Doodle Dandy\" \/><\/a>As a private citizen, Cagney cherished the star-spangled banner. According to \u201cCagney,\u201d a biography by John McCabe, the actor\u2019s \u201cbiggest celebration of the year was the Fourth of July.\u201d Cagney even planted red, white and blue flowers at the base of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flagpoles\">flagpole<\/a> near his house.<\/p>\n<p>While many people raise and lower their banners in time with sunrise and sunset, the actor refused to do so. \u201cI think too much of the flag not to see it constantly,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>A plaque marking where he grew up in New York City contains his name, three American flags, and the words, \u201cYankee Doodle Dandy\u201d and \u201cGod Bless America.\u201d His widow noted, \u201cThat says it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Higgins.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4096\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Higgins-300x241.jpg\" alt=\"Higgins\" \/><\/a>Georgieanna Higgins toiled in obscurity for years until newspapers found out about her job as the official seamstress of the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHiggins mends the flags that fly on the Capitol,\u201d reported The New York Times. \u201cFlags give her a lot of trouble. They snap so quickly into tatters in the Washington breeze.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She became so famous as the woman who mended flags that one person addressed a letter to \u201cThe Betsy Ross of the Capitol.\u201d She retired in 1945 after 28 years of working with shears, threads and needles.<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Bernard-Cigrand.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4095\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Bernard-Cigrand-196x300.jpeg\" alt=\"Bernard Cigrand\" \/><\/a>Finally, there was the professor, Bernard J. Cigrand, an expert in prosthetic dentistry and president of the American College of Dental Surgery. But he was more well known for urging the creation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/history-flag-day\/\">Flag Day<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1895, Cigrand formed the National Flag Day Association and began pushing for an annual salute to the grand old flag. A year later, he formally proposed the idea in an article for a Chicago newspaper. Over time, individuals, organizations, schools, cities and states joined in his effort to make June 14 the big day.<\/p>\n<p>A nationwide observance wouldn\u2019t be officially sanctioned until 1949, when President Harry S Truman signed an act of Congress establishing the date.<\/p>\n<p>June 14 was chosen because, on that date 240 years ago, the Second Continental Congress ordered that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/us-national-state\">the flag of the thirteen United States<\/a> be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Academy Award-winning actor, an obscure seamstress and a dental professor shared something in common: a deep love of the American flag.
