Its website notes that there are \u201cexhibits about the history of seapower, the development of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/military-flags\/armed-forces\/navy-flags\">U.S. Navy<\/a>, and the role of the U.S. Naval Academy in producing officers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the museum houses a treasure trove of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/historical-flags\">historic flags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Flag-with-a-slogan-All-photos-by-author.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4011\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Flag-with-a-slogan-All-photos-by-author-300x147.jpg\" alt=\"Flag with a slogan (All photos by author)\" width=\"300\" height=\"147\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Flag with a slogan (All photos by author)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An example is a flag with a famous saying on it from the War of 1812 \u2013 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/commodore-perry-don-t-give-up-the-ship-flag\">Don\u2019t Give Up the Ship<\/a>.\u201d The banner was created a year later \u201cto inspire American sailors going into battle,\u201d the museum notes. The banner\u2019s \u201cpatches and wear\u2026document a long\u2026history that, for many years, lay hidden behind a blue covering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The quotation was spoken by a dying naval officer, Captain James Lawrence. His friend, Oliver Hazard Perry, adopted the saying and had it stitched onto a flag.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/31-star-flag.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4009\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/31-star-flag-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"31 star flag\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>31 star flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Also in the museum\u2019s collection is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/historical-american-31-star-flag\">31-star flag<\/a>, which was probably hand-made by a sailor when word reached his ship that a state had been added to the Union: California in 1850. That news reached the ship months later since the vessel was cruising near Japan at the time.<\/p>\n<p>In 1942 in the Pacific, the Battle of Tassafaronga allowed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/new-orleans-city-flag-louisiana-usa\">New Orleans<\/a>, a cruiser, to show how to take a punch to protect another ship, Minneapolis, that had been slowed by several torpedoes launched from Japanese vessels. New Orleans maneuvered into harm\u2019s way and was hit with such force by a torpedo that its bow was shoved backwards.<\/p>\n<p>The crew took a very unusual step to save their ship. According to the museum, \u201ca temporary bow\u2026fashioned out of coconut logs enabled the cruiser to reach Australia for repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/USS-Trigger.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/USS-Trigger-300x178.jpg\" alt=\"USS Trigger\" width=\"300\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><figcaption>USS Trigger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During WWII, a submarine named USS Trigger achieved success after success, as witnessed by its battle flag, which is dotted with small Japanese flags to represent vessels Trigger had sunk in the Pacific. But its luck ran out shortly before the end of the conflict, when the American sub was sunk by Japanese planes dropping depth charges.<\/p>\n<p>A Purple Heart medal, which is displayed in the photo below the battle flag, was given posthumously to the entire crew.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Flags-guard-John-Paul-Jones-crypt.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4012\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Flags-guard-John-Paul-Jones-crypt-291x300.jpg\" alt=\"Flags guard John Paul Jones crypt\" width=\"291\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Flags guard John Paul Jones crypt<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All those samples can be found on a museum visit to Annapolis, but there\u2019s another stop on the campus that is a must because it\u2019s also filled with flags. They surround the crypt of John Paul Jones.
