When your new Marine comes home on \u2018boot leave,\u2019 he or she will be a different person. One of the biggest differences will be their attentiveness to matters of military courtesy, including how your American and Marine Corps flags<\/a> are displayed at home.<\/p>\n

\"Marine<\/a><\/figure>\n

Here are some tips on how to properly fly, hang, or otherwise display the National Ensign (the naval services name for the American flag).<\/p>\n

Tip #1: Keep it Left.<\/h3>\n

If your flag is flying on a staff or pole<\/a>, just make sure it\u2019s upright.<\/p>\n

If you fly the American flag next to any other flags, the American flag takes the position of honor\u2026which means it is to the far left of the entire arrangement as you view the arrangement from the front.<\/p>\n

You can hang American flags vertically, but\u2026\u2019keep it left.\u2019 The blue field of stars should be in the upper left as you look at the flag.<\/p>\n

The flag can also be hung horizontally, but again the canton is to the left as you view the flag.<\/p>\n

Tip #2: Treat the Flag with Respect.<\/h3>\n

The U.S. Flag<\/a> and the Marine Corps Flag<\/a> are important symbols of history, culture, freedom, and doing something bigger than yourself. Always treat the flags with respect.<\/p>\n

This is never okay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Never ball them up when you\u2019re not using them; don\u2019t let them touch the \u2018deck\u2019 (the ground); and if you see that they\u2019re starting to look tattered and frayed, take it down and get new ones. Tip #3: Know When and How to Salute.<\/h3>\n

Here are the basics<\/a>: when the National Anthem plays, or when a color guard passes in front of you, or during the Pledge of Allegiance, stand \u2018at attention.\u2019<\/p>\n

Stand up a little straighter, square your shoulders, and place your right hand over your heart.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a man and wearing a hat, take your hat off and hold it over your heart.<\/p>\n
