His short, 700-word speech is renowned for his offer of reconciliation toward the defeated southern states. \u201cWith malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right,\u201d he intoned, \u201clet us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation&#8217;s wounds\u2026and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Lincolns-first-inauguration-with-a-flag-flapping-wildly-in-the-wind.-wikipedia.org_.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3859\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Lincolns-first-inauguration-with-a-flag-flapping-wildly-in-the-wind.-wikipedia.org_.jpg\" alt=\"Lincoln's first inauguration with a flag flapping wildly in the wind. (wikipedia.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Four years earlier, when the Civil War was on the brink of exploding, Lincoln spoke at the Capitol with only a solo banner flapped wildly above him. But that flag almost disappeared before the new chief executive had said a word.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">As The New York Times described it in March 1861, \u201cEarly in the forenoon, when the flag was unfurled upon the Capitol, one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/hardware-accessories\/halyard-cable-arrangements\">halyards<\/a> gave way, and, splitting in two, the flag flung out like a pennant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">The sight of the loosened flag was undoubtedly going to be taken as a divine sign of the tearing apart of the Union and the coming War Between the States. Perhaps it would have even been seen as a prophecy of the North\u2019s defeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Another-image-of-the-1861-inauguration.-300x191.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3858\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Another-image-of-the-1861-inauguration.-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"Another image of the 1861 inauguration.\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Another image of the 1861 inauguration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Something had to be done to rescue the flag and restore it to its rightful place. \u201cFor a long while,\u201d The Times continued, the banner \u201ccould not be taken down.\u201d That might have been due to the windy conditions of the day or the difficulty of shinnying up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flagpoles\">flagpole<\/a> to retrieve the errant rope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">But, the newspaper continued, \u201cfinally an adventurous man climbed to the top of the staff.\u201d Once the anonymous hero reached the pole\u2019s peak, he tore away \u201cthe ill-omened standard\u201d and \u201creplaced it with an entire flag of the Union.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">For the time being, short as it was, the Union was intact, the halyard was strong and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a> was restored.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A previous article about American flags and Inauguration Days through the decades described how presidential ceremonies have often featured multiple banners and plenty of bunting to decorate the special day.
