Those flags have also, at times, caused controversy.<\/p>\n<h2>Fire Deaths<\/h2>\n<p>A melancholy example of the use of Old Glory and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/custom\/custom-fire-company-flags\">fire department flags<\/a> dates back to 1854, when several firemen died in their efforts to put out a conflagration. The New York Times recorded that \u201cthroughout the day, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">City flag<\/a> and the flags of the various fire companies were displayed at half-mast\u201d to honor the fallen.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Yonkers-FD-centennial-patch.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Yonkers-FD-centennial-patch-296x300.jpg\" alt=\"Yonkers FD centennial patch\" width=\"214\" height=\"217\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Yonkers FD centennial patch<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe mingle our grief with that of the relatives in their mournful bereavement,\u201d said a resolution from the fire department, \u201cand assure them of a firemen\u2019s heartfelt sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>New Firehouse Banner<\/h2>\n<p>In 1896, 120 years ago, the Yonkers (NY) Fire Department was formed. The town council resolved to move from an all-volunteer force to one that included paid firefighters, and to purchase modern equipment and install more alarms throughout the city.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Yonkers-Fire-Dept.-flag.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3652\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Yonkers-Fire-Dept.-flag-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"Yonkers Fire Dept. flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Yonkers Fire Dept. flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That October, the YFD took part in a Columbus Day parade and marched with its first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/fire-fighter-flags\">fire department flag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The current YFD flag includes the images of two banners on it: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a> as well as the earlier and simpler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/fire-fighter-flags\">fire flag<\/a>, which contained just the initials \u201cYFD\u201d on a fiery red background.<\/p>\n<h2>Controversies<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Controversial-Albany-Fire-Department-flag.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3648\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Controversial-Albany-Fire-Department-flag-298x300.jpg\" alt=\"Controversial Albany Fire Department flag\" width=\"298\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Controversial Albany Fire Department flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The city fire company in Albany, New York, recently changed its old logo to sidestep a new controversy. The alteration, made in 2014, removed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/historical-civil-war-flags\">Confederate flag<\/a> from the logo because the Stars and Bars has become increasingly controversial in recent times.<\/p>\n<p>The logo had showed both the American flag and the rebel banner on opposite sides of the departmental seal. The southern flag was used only as a symbol of the rebellious nature of the firefighters, according to a spokesman, and not as a salute to secession or slavery. Nevertheless, the flag was consigned to history.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Updated-Albany-FD-flag.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3650\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Updated-Albany-FD-flag-295x300.png\" alt=\"Updated Albany FD flag\" width=\"295\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Updated Albany FD flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This year, several fire departments and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fastfirewatchguards.com\">Fire Watch Guards Near Me<\/a> in were ordered by fire commissioners to remove American flags that flew on flagstaffs from their vehicles. Added to many trucks after 9\/11, the flags were seen by some as a possible hindrance to firefighting.<\/p>\n<p>The order was carried out, but not without disputes and hard feelings. Said one fireman, \u201cObviously, I was very upset with the\u2026directive, as was the department personnel.\u201d A union official observed, \u201cIt\u2019s\u2026a little patriotism at a time when the country needs it.
