Those with sharp eyes might also spot Philadelphia\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/city-of-philadelphia-flag\">city flag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The banner was conceived in 1894 by a learned expert with eclectic interests that included Scripture, spiders and document seals. Rev. Dr. Henry Christopher McCook, who led Tabernacle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/presbyterian-flag\">Presbyterian Church <\/a>in the city, was a man of great learning, an avid collector of historiana, and a military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/chaplain-boat-flag-choose-options\">chaplain<\/a> during both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/historical-military-flags\">Civil War<\/a> and the Spanish-American War.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/McCook-during-the-Civil-War.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3438\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/McCook-during-the-Civil-War-217x300.png\" alt=\"McCook during the Civil War\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>McCook during the Civil War<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also lobbied city hall for a flag that would salute Philly. A newspaper reported that the minister \u201cmade a vigorous address [to a committee of the City Council] in advocacy\u201d of creating a flag. Citing historic precedence, he argued that doing so would be \u201cin accordance with the ancient custom of independent municipalities\u201d having \u201can authorized flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, McCook said, \u201cA civic flag is calculated to inspire a spirit of civic loyalty,\u2026precisely as similar use of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/flags-of-the-world\">National Flag<\/a> tends to foster a spirit of national loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Rev.-McCook-who-designed-Philadelphias-city-flag.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3442\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Rev.-McCook-who-designed-Philadelphias-city-flag-300x247.png\" alt=\"Rev. McCook, who designed Philadelphia&#8217;s city flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Volunteering his talents and expertise to make a flag, the minister said he was compelled \u201cby a desire to do my duty as a citizen and\u2026to deepen in the hearts of my fellow citizens\u2019 pride and love for a city which\u2026has been my adopted home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once he was given the go-ahead, the reverend created a city flag divided into three vertical bars colored blue, yellow and blue again. In the center of the banner lies the city\u2019s arms from its municipal seal. It shows two women who represent peace and plenty. Also decorating the banner are a scale of justice, a plow and a sailing ship.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Philadelphias-city-seal-painted-around-1820-by-artist-Thomas-Sully.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3441\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Philadelphias-city-seal-painted-around-1820-by-artist-Thomas-Sully-296x300.png\" alt=\"Philadelphia's city seal, painted around 1820 by artist Thomas Sully\" width=\"296\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Philadelphia&#8217;s city seal, painted around 1820 by artist Thomas Sully<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>McCook knew a lot about official seals and coats of arms. The Philadelphia Inquirer credited him with having \u201cwhat is probably the most extensive collection [of seals] in the world.\u201d Among his collection, for instance, were the seals of every state in the Union. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/pennsylvania-state-flags\">Pennsylvania<\/a>, of course, was among them.<\/p>\n<p>But the Philadelphia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/custom\/custom-town-city-state-government-flags\">municipal flag<\/a> might be his piece de resistance. The Inquirer called it \u201ca beautiful banner\u201d that was \u201cthe result of Dr. McCook\u2019s fertile brain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Pennsylvanias-state-seal.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3439\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/Pennsylvanias-state-seal-300x300.png\" alt=\"Pennsylvania's state seal\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Pennsylvania&#8217;s state seal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Formally adopted in 1895, the city flag also contains a Latin slogan, \u201cPhiladelphia Maneto,\u201d meaning \u201cLet brotherly love continue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That sentiment might be displayed at the political convention, but it\u2019s doubtful the amity will continue on either side during the campaign season that leads to November\u2019s presidential election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When members of the Democratic Party gather in the City of Brotherly Love for their quadrennial convention to nominate a presidential candidate, they will see American flags all around the venue.
