The Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., is finally beginning the process of removing two images of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/confederate-1st-national-flag\">Confederate battle flag<\/a> that appear in a large, stained-glass window.<\/p>\n<p>A year ago, the Very Rev. Gary Hall, then dean of the Episcopal church, issued a statement on the church\u2019s website. He said that the windows, installed in 1953, were designed to honor \u201cthe lives and legacies of Confederate Generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee. Both windows display the image of the Confederate battle flag.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A-closeup-of-one-of-the-panes.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3340\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A-closeup-of-one-of-the-panes-164x300.jpg\" alt=\"A closeup of one of the panes\" width=\"164\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>A closeup of one of the panes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Explaining the intentions of his predecessors who approved the installation of the panes, a gift from the Daughters of the Confederacy, Hall said that it had been \u201choped [the imagery] would foster reconciliation between parts of the nation that had been divided by the Civil War. Because this Cathedral is the \u2018national\u2019 cathedral, it sought to depict America\u2019s history in a way that promoted healing and reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But six decades have passed since then, Hall noted, so \u201cit is time to take those windows out\u2026.We know that celebrating the lives of these two men, and the flag under which they fought, promotes neither healing nor reconciliation, especially for our African-American sisters and brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A-stained-glass-window-at-the-Washington-National-Cathedral-contains-the-two-Confederate-flags.-Washington-National-Cathedral.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3341\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/A-stained-glass-window-at-the-Washington-National-Cathedral-contains-the-two-Confederate-flags.-Washington-National-Cathedral-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"A stained-glass window at the Washington National Cathedral contains the two Confederate flags. (Washington National Cathedral)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The decision to delete the window was made, he continued, \u201cin the aftermath of a year of racial tensions and violence \u2013 from killings of unarmed black men by police to the shootings of nine members of Emanuel AME Church in Charleston.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those events, Hall said, prove that \u201cthe Confederate battle flag has emerged as the primary symbol of a culture of white supremacy that we and all Americans of good will must repudiate.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/State-flags-hang-in-the-nave-of-the-cathedral.-wikipedia.com_.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3342\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/State-flags-hang-in-the-nave-of-the-cathedral.-wikipedia.com_-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"State flags hang in the nave of the cathedral. (wikipedia.com)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Putting it even more directly, he added, \u201cThere is no place for the Confederate battle flag in the iconography of the nation\u2019s most visible faith community. We cannot in good conscience justify the presence of the Confederate flag in this house of prayer for all people, nor can we honor the systematic oppression of African-Americans for which these two men [Lee and Jackson] fought and died.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the alteration wouldn\u2019t happen overnight, Hall explained last year, \u201cbecause changing windows in a Gothic building takes time, energy and money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the interim dean of the Cathedral, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde, told The New York Times that the glass images will be taken out \u201cas soon as we can do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What will replace them has not yet been announced, but the church still has plenty of flags.
