(Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The nation, one of its states and a branch of the military are marking special flag anniversaries this month.<\/p>\n<h3>FLAG DAY<\/h3>\n<p>One hundred years ago, as the U.S. grew nearer to entering World War I, President Woodrow Wilson officially established June 14 as Flag Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany circumstances have recently conspired,\u201d he wrote in 1916, \u201cto turn our thoughts to a critical examination of the conditions of our national life, of the influences which have seemed to threaten to divide us in interest and sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, he said that it was \u201cfitting that I should call your attention to the approach of the anniversary of the day upon which the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/united-states-of-america-flags\">flag of the United States<\/a> was adopted by the Congress as the emblem of the Union, and to suggest to you that it should this year and in the years to come be given special significance as a day\u2026upon which we should direct our minds\u2026to thoughts of the ideals and principles of which we have sought to make our great Government the embodiment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us\u2026rededicate ourselves to the nation, \u2018one and inseparable\u2019\u2026[and] stand with united hearts for an America which no man can corrupt, no influence draw away from its ideals.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Arkansas-flag.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3329\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Arkansas-flag-300x200.png\" alt=\"Arkansas flag\" \/><\/a>ARKAN-STARS<\/h3>\n<p>In June 1836, 180 years ago, America got its 25th state: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/arkansas-state-flags\">Arkansas Flag<\/a>. In 1912, to mark a patriotic occasion, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/state-flags\">state flag<\/a> was called for. There was, however, a major problem: Arkansas didn\u2019t have one.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Willie-Kavanaugh-Hocker-Arkansas-History-Commission.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3333\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Willie-Kavanaugh-Hocker-Arkansas-History-Commission-211x300.png\" alt=\"Willie Kavanaugh Hocker (Arkansas History Commission)\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Willie Kavanaugh Hocker (Arkansas History Commission)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Quickly, a contest was launched to come up with a state banner. After more than six dozen entries had been considered, a red, white and blue design by Willie Kavanaugh Hocker, a teacher,\u00a0was chosen, and she became the Betsy Ross of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<p>The flag contains a diamond shape that bears the state\u2019s name and a sprinkling of stars. The diamond represents the state\u2019s uniqueness in having America\u2019s only diamond mine, while the stars have several meanings. First, there are 25 to indicate that the state was the 25th to join the Union.<\/p>\n<p>Originally, three twinklers placed in the middle stood for the nations that claimed the area: Spain, France and the U.S. In 1923, a fourth star was added to represent the state\u2019s secession to join the Confederacy, an alteration that was later officially approved by President Bill Clinton, a native of Arkansas.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Seal-of-the-U.S.-Army.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3332\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Seal-of-the-U.S.-Army-300x300.gif\" alt=\"Seal of the U.S. Army\" width=\"254\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/military-flags\/armed-forces\">MILITARY FLAG<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Sixty years ago, President Dwight D. Eisenhower formally signed a document that blessed the design for the official flag of the U.S. Army.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a>The military flag, said the document, should be made of \u201cwhite silk or rayon, with yellow fringe\u2026.In the center [lies] the design of the seal of the Department of the Army.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Eisenhower-backed-by-an-American-flag.-238x300.png\" alt=\"Eisenhower, backed by an American flag.\" width=\"238\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption>Eisenhower, backed by an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The president also approved the addition of streamers to the banner to represent \u201ccampaigns in which the United States Army has participated.
