Vermont is marking the 225th anniversary of its entry, on March 4, 1791, into the U. S. As the 14th state, it was the first to join the Union after the original 13 colonies.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/state-flags\">State Flag<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The first official Vermont flag, chosen in 1862, consisted of 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and a blue square in the upper left. Inside the square were one large star and the state\u2019s coat of arms.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Vermont-state-flag.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3059\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Vermont-state-flag-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"Vermont state flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Vermont state flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1923, the current Vermont state flag was chosen, using a design that dates back to the Revolutionary War, when it was a banner carried by troops. The coat of arms was moved to the center of the solidly blue flag with \u201cVermont\u201d written on a scroll.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vermonthistory.org\">www.vermonthistory.org<\/a>, \u201cthe coat of arms has many symbols that represent Vermont.\u00a0It has mountains and a red cow.\u00a0There are trees, including a pine tree in the middle.\u00a0Three\u00a0sheaves\u00a0of grain stand on a green field.\u201d Atop the seal is a deer\u2019s head. (New York Public Library)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Vermont is so careful about its flag that a law designates how it\u2019s to be disseminated. According to Title 1, Chapter 11 and paragraph 496 of the state\u2019s statutes, \u201cThe Secretary of State shall, through the Department of Buildings and General Services, obtain State Flags\u2026.He or she may, in his or her discretion and on such terms as he or she finds appropriate, distribute said State Flags to other states, to State officials, departments, and agencies, and to such other persons as he or she may determine should have them in the interest of the State.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Montpelier-city-flag.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3056\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Montpelier-city-flag-300x180.gif\" alt=\"Montpelier city flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Montpelier city flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">Municipal Flag<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>The state capital, Montpelier, has its own flag, which presents an idyllic image of the town. At the top are the words: \u201cMontpelier, Chartered in 1781.\u201d Below that phrase is a cartoon-like drawing of the city.<\/p>\n<p>The image includes mountains, which, of course, are green since Vermont is the Green Mountain State. Dotted along the hills are images of churches, the statehouse, a silo and rectangles representing homes.<\/p>\n<p>The city flag, designed by Linda Mirabile, originated as an image for welcome signs to Montpelier. In 2000, her work was adopted as the official city flag.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/University-of-Vermont-seal.gif\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3057\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/University-of-Vermont-seal-243x300.gif\" alt=\"University of Vermont seal\" width=\"243\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>University of Vermont seal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/custom\/custom-school-flags-banners\">College Flag<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>Located in Burlington, the University of Vermont is also marking its 225th anniversary. Only Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Brown predate the college in New England. U of V proudly notes that it was the \u201cfirst university to admit women and African-Americans into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like the capital, the university salutes the state\u2019s nickname by using \u201cUniversitas Viridis Montis\u201d as its motto. That means \u201cUniversity of the Green Mountains.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/University-of-Vermonts-flag.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3058\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/University-of-Vermonts-flag-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"University of Vermont's flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>University of Vermont&#8217;s flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Like the state, U of V has a detailed and strict policy regarding its own flag and other banners, declaring, \u201cThe flying of flags representing an entity other than the United States of America, the State of Vermont, or the University of Vermont as a whole shall be restricted to designated campus special event flagpoles and governed by the procedures for approval outlined hereunder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The college flag consists of a large V through which a catamount steps. It\u2019s the nickname of the sports teams. Much more elaborate is the university seal, which dates to 1807.
