The orchestra\u2019s first act was to play \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner\u201d in honor of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 17-year-old guest soloist, born in Poland, was Jascha Heifetz, destined to become one of the greatest virtuosos of the violin. He loved his instrument, he loved classical music, and perhaps it was that night when he fell in love with America.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/1919-program-for-Heifetzs-debut.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3040\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/1919-program-for-Heifetzs-debut-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"1919 program for Heifetz's debut\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>1919 program for Heifetz&#8217;s debut<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Critics and audiences applauded wildly for Heifetz, whose career would continue for decades until his death in 1987. While millions rose to their feet for his artistic mastery, few music-lovers knew of his commitment to the U.S. after he became a citizen in 1925.<\/p>\n<p>With a newcomer\u2019s fervor, the musician declared, \u201cI\u2019m going to do something for the country I have adopted.\u201d Heifetz found his greatest opportunity during World War II when he gave benefit concerts for war relief at home and abroad. His performances on nationwide radio programs also brought in donations from listeners, with the money going for the purchase of Defense Bonds.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Heifetz-at-a-performance-for-GIs.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3043\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Heifetz-at-a-performance-for-GIs-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"Heifetz at a performance for GIs\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Heifetz at a performance for GIs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But that wasn\u2019t enough for Heifetz. He also began giving free performances at military camps around America in 1942 and then expanded his tours to military bases in Central America, South America and Europe from 1943 to 1945. The day the war ended in Europe in 1945, Heifetz mounted a stage in Germany and played for the weary troops.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Heifetz-as-a-teenager.-Library-of-Congress.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3042\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Heifetz-as-a-teenager.-Library-of-Congress-176x300.jpg\" alt=\"Heifetz as a teenager. (Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For decades to come, the virtuoso of the violin made room in his heart for patriotism as well as for music. A woman who studied with him and then became his accompanist, said that her lessons given on national holidays didn\u2019t begin until Heifetz had raised the American flag at his California home.<\/p>\n<p>Then \u201che took it down himself at sunset,\u201d she recounted. \u201cHe rigorously required all guests to be present at the ceremony and to display the proper respect toward the flag while it was lowered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His attention to detail extended to carefully folding the star-spangled banner. \u201cIf his students were present,\u201d she explained, \u201che never missed the opportunity to teach them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/fold-american-flag\">how to fold the flag properly<\/a> and how to store it in its box.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Carnegie-Hall.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3041\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/Carnegie-Hall-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"Carnegie Hall\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Carnegie Hall flying branded flags<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/hardware-accessories\/ornaments-finials\">orb at the top of the flagpole<\/a> showed wear and tear from West Coast weather, he had it replated with gold. \u201cFinding a company that would accept the job of gold plating it as Heifetz wished, instead of just adding gold leaf, was difficult,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But the maestro apparently played the workmen like a violin, and the orb sparkled in the sun.<\/p>\n<p>(Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaschaheifetz.com\">www.j<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jaschaheifetz.com\">aschaheifetz.com<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At New York City\u2019s Carnegie Hall at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, 1919, the New York Philharmonic presented is 1,294th concert.
