This year marks the school\u2019s 250th anniversary. The crown on the banner recalls Queen\u2019s College, from which the school evolved. In 1825, it was named for Col. Henry Rutgers, an early trustee and veteran of the American Revolution.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Col.-Henry-Rutgers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Col.-Henry-Rutgers.jpg\" alt=\"Col. Henry Rutgers\" width=\"200\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Col. Henry Rutgers<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Under the college\u2019s strict rules, the flag \u201cis to be flown at the entranceways of university buildings or at special, officially sanctioned university events\u2026.[It] is not approved for use\u2026under any other circumstances.\u201d Rutgers is so firm about its policy that the public is not permitted to purchase the flag.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty years ago, an alumnus, John Lenkey III decided to pay tribute to the Rutgers\u2019 flag by planting it in mountains around the world. As a result, such locations as Australia\u2019s highest peak and Mount Fuji in Japan have been adorned with his alma mater\u2019s standard.<\/p>\n<p>Lenkey also invited people to autograph another <a title=\"college flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/custom-school-flags-banners-portfolio\">college flag<\/a> he carried. It bears, among others, the signatures of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who climbed Mount Everest in 1953.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Flag-of-Trenton.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Flag-of-Trenton-300x180.gif\" alt=\"Flag of Trenton\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Flag of Trenton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>TRENTON<\/p>\n<p>In 1985, George Dougherty, city attorney for New Jersey\u2019s capital, realized something no one else had noticed: Even though Trenton had been the capital since the 1790s, it didn\u2019t have an official <a title=\"municipal flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">municipal flag<\/a>. His thought came at the right time because the North American Vexillological Society, which studies and rates flags, was planning to meet in Trenton in 1986.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Charter-Window-depicts-creation-of-Queens-College.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Charter-Window-depicts-creation-of-Queens-College-237x300.jpg\" alt=\"Charter Window depicts creation of Queens College\" width=\"237\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Charter Window depicts creation of Queens College<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Appointing himself \u201ca one-man committee,\u201d Dougherty decided on the look of the city\u2019s banner. Split into gold and blue, the <a title=\"city flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">city flag<\/a> displays the city seal, which includes a horse\u2019s head and three sheaves of wheat, reflective of the Garden State\u2019s agricultural history.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"_GoBack\"><\/a>The official adoption of the municipal flag made only one significant change to the unofficial Trenton banner: The seal was moved from the left side of the flag to its middle, straddling the two colors.<\/p>\n<p>NEW JERSEY<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/New-Jerseys-coat-of-arms-as-drawn-in-1876.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/New-Jerseys-coat-of-arms-as-drawn-in-1876-277x300.jpg\" alt=\"New Jersey's coat of arms as drawn in 1876\" width=\"277\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>New Jersey&#8217;s coat of arms as drawn in 1876<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a title=\"state flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/new-jersey-flag-outdoor\">state flag<\/a>, designated 120 years ago in 1896, is blue and buff, echoing colors George Washington chose for uniforms during the Revolutionary War. His headquarters was located in New Jersey for a time.<\/p>\n<p>As described by the state, the seal \u201ccontains a horse\u2019s head\u201d as well as \u201ca helmet showing that New Jersey governs itself and three plows\u2026referring to the State\u2019s agriculture tradition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two goddesses on the flag \u201crepresent the state motto, \u2018Liberty and Prosperity.\u2019\u201d On the left side, Liberty holds \u201ca staff with a liberty cap on it, and the word liberty underneath her.\u201d On the right is Ceres, \u201cgoddess of agriculture,\u2026holding a cornucopia with \u2018Prosperity\u2019 written below her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot of old stuff for New Jersey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The state of New Jersey, the city of Trenton and Rutgers University boast flags of great appeal and historical interest.
