If that\u2019s not sufficient, there\u2019s also a college flag for one of Texas\u2019s many institutions of higher education.<\/p>\n<h2><a title=\"State Flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/state-flags\">STATE FLAG<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>The <a title=\"Texas state flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/texas-flag-outdoor\">Texas state banner<\/a>, created six years before statehood, is remarkably simple in design. It\u2019s appropriate that the Lone Star State\u2019s red-white-and-blue flag contains just a single star. And it\u2019s not surprising that it\u2019s a sizable star, given the preference of Texans for gigantic things, including the state\u2019s sprawling square mileage and a 1950s\u2019 movie about it titled \u2013 what else? \u2013 \u201cGiant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Texas entered the Union, a newspaper said, \u201cWe had the pleasure of seeing for the first time the Star Spangled Banner waving triumphantly over the Lone Star Flag\u2026.[It] was the signal of\u2026rejoicing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The state flag is so beloved by Texans that, decades ago, the legislature commended a man who beat up someone who had desecrated the standard.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/City-of-Austin-coat-of-arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/City-of-Austin-coat-of-arms-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"City of Austin coat of arms\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>City of Austin coat of arms<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><a title=\"MUNICIPAL FLAG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">MUNICIPAL FLAG<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>As for the state capital, Austin was chosen by \u201ca site-selection commission appointed by the Texas Congress in January 1839,\u201d according to the Texas State Historical Association. The commission was \u201cimpressed by [the site\u2019s] beauty, healthfulness, abundant natural resources, promise as an economic hub, and central location in Texas territory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s name honors Stephen Austin, a Virginian who helped to establish the Republic of Texas in the 1830s. He said that \u201cthe prosperity of Texas has been the object of my labors, the idol of my existence \u2013 it has assumed the character of a\u00a0religion, for the guidance of my thoughts and actions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Stephen-Austin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Stephen-Austin-252x300.jpg\" alt=\"Stephen Austin\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Stephen Austin<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A hundred years ago, Austin\u2019s municipal flag was designed by the winner of a contest to give the city its own banner, but it wasn\u2019t officially adopted until 1919. Ironically, the design was the work of a man in San Francisco, not by a Texan.<\/p>\n<p>Resting on a white field, the <a title=\"city flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">municipal flag<\/a> was derived from Stephen Austin\u2019s coat of arms. It contains symbolic images, such as a lamp to represent knowledge and the silhouette of the state capitol building. The crest also features a controversial element: a Christian cross. Challenged many years ago as a violation of the separation of church and state, the cross remains on the flag, due to a court ruling.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Rowdy-the-Mascot.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Rowdy-the-Mascot-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Rowdy the Mascot\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Rowdy the Mascot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><a title=\"COLLEGE FLAG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/college-sports-flags-banners\">COLLEGE FLAG<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Texas boasts dozens of universities within its borders, many of them with unusual college flags. A good example is the banner of the University of Texas San Antonio. Its sports mascot is the roadrunner, but definitely not the wacky cartoon character.<\/p>\n<p>Displayed on a blue-and-orange background, Rowdy the Roadrunner faces right with a fierce glare and sharp beak.
