They captured the movement, colors and patriotic echoes of the banners. The list includes Claude Monet, who was born 175 years ago; Vincent van Gogh, who died 125 years ago; and Childe Hassam, who died 80 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>MONET<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Monet-in-1887.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Monet-in-1887-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"Monet in 1887\" width=\"185\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Monet in 1887<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Around Bastille Day, July 14, 1878, Monet produced twin paintings that depicted the thousands of tri-color <a title=\"French flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/france-flag\">French flags<\/a> that had been unfurled around Paris. There were two reasons for the displays: the usual patriotic pride occasioned by the holiday that memorialized the French Revolution in the 18th century and a celebration of the renewed French Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The artworks depict two streets, La rue Montorgueil \u00e0 Paris and La rue Saint-Denis. A critic complimented the first image for its \u201cimpressionist technique, with its multitude of small strokes of color,\u201d which \u201csuggests the animation of the crowd and the waving of flags.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/The-rue-de-Saint-Denis-by-Monet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/The-rue-de-Saint-Denis-by-Monet-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"'The rue de Saint-Denis' by Monet\" width=\"185\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><figcaption>&#8216;The rue de Saint-Denis&#8217; by Monet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An assessment of the second painting described it as a \u201cstreet flooded with jubilant Parisians\u2026with a strong sense of perspective\u201d and \u201cflashes of color, the fluttering, flapping, twisting flags dominat[ing] the space.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/The-Rue-Montorgueil-in-Paris-by-Monet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/The-Rue-Montorgueil-in-Paris-by-Monet-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"'The Rue Montorgueil in Paris' by Monet\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>&#8216;The Rue Montorgueil in Paris&#8217; by Monet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>VAN GOGH<\/p>\n<p>Twelve years later, in mid-July 1890, Holland-born van Gogh set up an easel in his rented room in Auvers, France, and looked out the window. He spied rows of flags and pennants that had been strung on the town hall to celebrate Bastille Day, which is equivalent to the Fourth of July in the United States.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Van-Goghs-painting-of-the-town-hall-in-Auvers-France-shows-flags-and-other-decorations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Van-Goghs-painting-of-the-town-hall-in-Auvers-France-shows-flags-and-other-decorations-300x244.jpg\" alt=\"Van Gogh's painting of the town hall in Auvers, France, shows flags and other decorations\" width=\"187\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Van Gogh&#8217;s painting of the town hall in Auvers, France, shows flags and other decorations<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>With the strokes of his brushes, guided by the keenness of his eyes, the artist caught the flurry of flags, emblematic of the excitement that accompanied the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, that jubilant moment was followed by tragedy: Van Gogh died just days later on July 30.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Auvers-town-hall-today.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Auvers-town-hall-today-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Auvers town hall today\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Auvers town hall today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>HASSAM<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Childe-Hassam-in-1900-Library-of-Congress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Childe-Hassam-in-1900-Library-of-Congress-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Childe Hassam in 1900 (Library of Congress)\" width=\"185\" height=\"259\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Childe Hassam in 1900 (Library of Congress)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 100 years ago, during World War I, Boston native Childe Hassam, in a burst of patriotism, went on a painting binge and turned out nearly 30 images of <a title=\"American flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\/outdoor-american-flags\">American flags<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An uncredited art critic for The New York Times said that the images \u201chave extraordinary gusto and gaiety, evoking just the temper in which you toss up your hat to get some of your joyousness into the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those words may have been penned by Elisabeth Luther Cary, who was an art critic for The Times for 25 years.
