The American\u00a0flag<\/a> is one of the most recognizable flags in the world. With its trademark\u00a0white and red stripes and 50 bold stars, it\u2019s hard to imagine it looking\u00a0any other way.\u00a0 However, the American\u00a0flag<\/a> wasn\u2019t always the stars and stripes we know today. In fact, the\u00a0U.S. flag has gone through many changes \u2013 26 to be exact \u2013 before it became\u00a0the iconic symbol that it is today.<\/p>\n

When the Declaration\u00a0of Independence was signed in 1776, the flag of the United States was the Grand Union flag, consisting of the familiar red and white stripes with a\u00a0small Union Jack in the corner, representing the country\u2019s ties with England.\u00a0 However,\u00a0the Union Jack would not be a permanent fixture on the flag, and it was only\u00a0a matter of time before the stars would replace the Union Jack on the flag.<\/p>\n

On\u00a0June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution,\u00a0which outlined that the official flag of the United States should consist\u00a0of 13 red and white stripes and 13 stars, representing the 13 original colonies.\u00a0 Flag\u00a0Day is celebrated today on June 14 in the U.S to commemorate this historic\u00a0event. \u00a0As legend has it, Betsy Ross was approached by George Washington\u00a0and other members of the Continental Congress to sew a flag to the Flag Resolution\u2019s\u00a0specifications.\u00a0 Though it has never been proven, a flag with red and\u00a0white stripes and thirteen circular stars is known as the Betsy\u00a0Ross flag<\/a> to this day.<\/p>\n

The American\u00a0flag<\/a> went through several more incarnations over the next few years. The\u00a0number of stripes changed from 15 then back to 13, as it remains today\u00a0to honor the 13 original colonies.\u00a0 In 1818, an act was passed to\u00a0have a star added to the flag each time a state was admitted to the Union.\u00a0 Today,\u00a0the American\u00a0flag<\/a> flies proudly with 13 stripes and 50 stars.<\/p>\n

The American\u00a0flag<\/a> has been an inspiration to many, from patriots fighting for the\u00a0country they love to songwriters looking to express their pride.\u00a0 From\u00a0Francis Scott Key\u2019s \u201cStar-Spangled Banner\u201d to George M. Cohan\u2019s \u201cYou\u2019re\u00a0a Grand Old Flag,\u201d the American\u00a0flag<\/a> has forever been immortalized in song.\u00a0 While the flag has\u00a0gone through many changes throughout the years, it\u2019s hard to imagine it\u00a0looking any other way than the proud stars and stripes it bears today.<\/p>\n
