That changed the <a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a>, but what are their <a title=\"state flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/state-flags\">state flags<\/a> like? Do they have interesting capital <a title=\"city flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">city flags<\/a> as well?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Idahos-state-flag.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Idahos-state-flag-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"Idaho's state flag\" \/><\/a>IDAHO<\/p>\n<p>The<a title=\"state flag of Idaho\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/idaho-flag-outdoor\"> state flag of Idaho<\/a> uses the words \u201cState of Idaho\u201d twice. That\u2019s because it\u2019s made up of the state\u2019s seal on a blue background.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the words, the busy seal features a man, a woman and an animal\u2019s head. The female figure represents liberty and justice, while the male, who holds a shovel and pick, is a miner, reflective of one of Idaho\u2019s main industries. Another, tinier man, shown plowing, appears in a seal within the seal (another redundancy) to honor the state\u2019s agricultural history.<\/p>\n<p>Emblazoned above all those images is the motto \u201cEsto Perpetua,\u201d Latin for \u201cLet it exist forever.\u201d Atop the seal is an elk, reflecting Idaho\u2019s protection of that species.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Boises-municipal-flag.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Boises-municipal-flag-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Boise's municipal flag\" \/><\/a>BOISE MUNICIPAL FLAG<\/p>\n<p>The flag of the capital of Idaho is mostly blue, includes the state capitol dome and carries the simple slogan: \u201cBoise: City of Trees.\u201d The city name is printed in yellow.<\/p>\n<p>This slogan makes perfect sense because \u201cboise\u201d is a French word meaning \u201cwooded.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Wyomings-state-flag.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Wyomings-state-flag-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"Wyoming's state flag\" \/><\/a>WYOMING<\/p>\n<p>The red, white and blue state <a title=\"flag of Wyoming\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/wyoming-flag-outdoor\">flag of Wyoming<\/a> is one of the simplest among the 50 states. It features the outline of a bison on which is stamped a black-and-white copy of the state seal.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary of State in Wyoming, explaining the contents of the Great Seal, said it has two dates, 1869 and 1890, to \u201ccommemorate the organization of the territorial government and Wyoming\u2019s admission into the Union.\u201d A female figure grasps \u201ca banner proclaiming \u2018Equal Rights,\u2019\u201d because the state granted full rights to both sexes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Wyoming-state-seal.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Wyoming-state-seal-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wyoming state seal\" \/><\/a>Two men on the seal \u201ctypify the livestock and mining industries of the state,\u201d according to the Secretary. \u201cUpon a five-pointed star the number 44 appears,\u201d indicative of the state being the 44th to enter the Union.<\/p>\n<p>Also within the seal are \u201clamps from which burn the Light of Knowledge,\u201d while \u201cscrolls encircling the two pillars bear the words \u2018Oil,\u2019 \u2018Mines,\u2019 \u2018Livestock\u2019 and \u2018Grain,\u2019 four of Wyoming&#8217;s major industries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Cheyennes-municipal-flag.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Cheyennes-municipal-flag-300x227.jpg\" alt=\"Cheyenne's municipal flag\" \/><\/a>CHEYENNE MUNICIPAL FLAG<\/p>\n<p>The gold, brown and white flag of Cheyenne, the capital of Wyoming, also contains a bison, this one within a circle that bears the words: \u201cThe Equality State: Wyoming.\u201d Six stars glimmer on the banner.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Rick Kaysen sent information about the flag, which supplanted an earlier version that featured a cowboy. In 2002, the western figure was removed by a resolution of the city council. The resolution said that the bison \u201cencourages the continuation of the spirit of the west and enhances the city\u2019s image of strength\u2026to serve the public.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The city flag also carries a date, 1867, the year of the first charter of the town that would become the state capital. At the time, Cheyenne was part of the Dakota Territory.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/An-early-section-of-Cheyennes-Avenue-of-Flags-www.cheyennecity.org_.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/An-early-section-of-Cheyennes-Avenue-of-Flags-www.cheyennecity.org_-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"Cheyenne's Avenue of Flags\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption>An early section of Cheyenne&#8217;s Avenue of Flags (www.cheyennecity.org)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The city is also in the process of honoring the American flag through the creation of an \u201cAvenue of Flags.\u201d With the aid of the American Legion, the Cheyenne\u2019s \u201clong-term plan\u201d is \u201cto line the roadways throughout the various cemeteries [in the city] with U.S. flags in an attempt to increase patriotism and enhance the cemeteries.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week\u2019s article focused on how, 125 years ago, Wyoming and Idaho became states.
