It was a gigantic <a title=\"American flag\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/american-flags\">American flag<\/a> with elongated red-and-white stripes that were torn into individual strips.<\/p>\n<p>The artist told The New York Times that his work represented \u201cone possible fate of America\u2026.There are cracks in the seams of what we are\u2026.If anyone thinks I\u2019m besmirching or making fun of the flag, I should say that I don\u2019t share their idea of patriotism\u2026.[If] the flag is as strong and resilient as they say it is, it should be able to stand up to this. This doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t love my country. I\u2019m asking questions of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Continuing his explanation, he said that \u201cthis project is a chance for people to feel the flag. People need to feel their democracy, not just hear words about it. For me, democracy is active, not passive\u2026.I am showing something that\u2019s always been true. The American flag is not a toy. It\u2019s not tame. It\u2019s bright, loud, bristling and alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"figure alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Los-Angeles-municipal-flag.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Los-Angeles-municipal-flag-300x199.png\" alt=\"Los Angeles' municipal flag\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Los Angeles&#8217; municipal flag<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Los Angeles <a title=\"municipal flags\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/flags-banners\/cities-counties-flags\">municipal flag<\/a> is also very bright as well as extraordinarily complex, crammed with symbols and stuffed with images. Three thick, vertical segments with jagged edges \u2013 green, yellow and red \u2013 divide the banner. In the middle stripe sits the city\u2019s circular seal, which was adopted 110 years ago. Atop the seal, the words \u201cCity of Los Angeles\u201d appear; below, it says, \u201cFounded 1781.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s only the beginning of the complexity of the city\u2019s seal and municipal flag. They are freighted with multiple symbols, including four animals, which reflect the history of Los Angeles:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Seal-of-Los-Angeles.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.gettysburgflag.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Seal-of-Los-Angeles-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Seal of Los Angeles\" \/><\/a>*Stars and stripes indicate LA\u2019s location as a U.S. city;<\/p>\n<p>*Olive, grape and orange sprays celebrate the agricultural abundance of southern California; and<\/p>\n<p>*A circle of 77 black beads represents a Rosary, indicative of the Roman Catholic missionaries who came to California.<\/p>\n<p>As for the four animals, they include:<\/p>\n<p>*A bear, copied from the California state flag;<\/p>\n<p>*A crowned lion, standing on its hind legs, reflective of the Spanish history of the city;<\/p>\n<p>*An eagle with a serpent in its mouth alongside a castle to indicate the Mexican influence on the city.
